22-03-13 Completion

Completion !!
Today we completed our opening sequence and exported. I was so happy because I felt releaved that we had finished it on time and it looked better than it thought it would, when i watched for a final time I gave the cuts particular attention and noticed that mostly all of them had good match on action. The music was definitely my favourite part because i enjoyed making it so much and it really did emphases certain feelings at certain part like when Theo was walking at the end it the piano made it a lot more tense.

22-03-13 - Titles

Today I finished making the titles here's a video of the title on live type, because the previous ones didn't completely suite the sequence and since I had a little bit of extra time I thought that it would look nicer.

Finishing/ Mixing the Music 21-03-13

20-03-13 Progress

Today we tided up all the scenes and sped up some scenes that looked a bit to slow
And we put the credits in the right places. As you can see in this screen shot we had to import the titles from live type in to adobe premier.

20-03-13 Making the Music

Today in the evening I started making the music for our sequence and i was lucky enough to get some help from a professional musician who is a friend of mine and I went down to his studio to make the music using a program called Logic Pro 9 which is a lot more professional than garage band. I am a musician myself so i wanted to make it from scratch. So initially we put the opening sequence on the time line and began putting down ideas. We used piano, strings, drums and a bass line and we put down the drop and telephone sounds on a Foley track.

Editing Diary 18-03-13

Today I edited most of the sequence, making sure that the match on actions were correct. It was very successful because I was able to get nearly all of the editing done in a short space of time. So therefore tomorrow I can start working on live type to do the titles.

Evaluation of filming 15-03-13

Today Tina and I re-filmed the the lab scenes we decided to do it without Theo and Mat because we thought that the narrative we be easier to read without Theo in the lab scenes. Overall I think that it went really well because we knew exactly what we wanted to film and at what angle we needed it at so it went smoothly. Also because this was our third time filming the lab scenes we knew what we got wrong the last two times and how we could improve it, like the continuity when Tina was holding the brief case to make sure that in the next scene she was holding it with the same hand and we changed the location slightly and added more props to strengthen the effect and to make it look as scientific as possible

Risk Assessment Filming 15-03-13

Risk assessment of re-filming the lab shots

Chemicals - Tina the actress wore gloves and an apron, to keep her hand and clothes safe as the chemical was an irritant.

Large Glass tube - It was used as a prop to help the scene look as scientific as possible, we made sure that it wasn't near the chemicals or the plug.

Skeleton - As it was large it could of fallen down on someone, so we made sure that the action in the scene wasn't near enough to Tina so she could actually touch it/ knock it over.

Plugs - We made sure that they were switch and no water/chemicals were near them.

Gas taps - We made sure that they were switched off by checking the tap and listening for gas.

Title Sequences

I have been researching title sequence and gaining ideas for our own title sequence

I came across the opening sequence for the movie The Andromeda Strain(1971) I can straight away tell that the movie is a sci fi/thriller movie because there are pictures of scientific maps and diagrams.

The words are moving across the page in all different directions and one of the main words that is repeated is 'Secret' this could show some confusion over the word or they are trying to show the importance of that particular word to the audience. This is similar to our opening sequence as we have a 'secret formula'.

The fonts are mainly typewriter style showing that the film is older also it could show that it is a more sophisticated movie and aimed at a different audience compared to what universal movies would usually be aimed at because they generally produce big blockbuster movies for a main audience of 16 - 25 than any other age groups.

The colour red is used a lot which could show that parts in the film may be dangerous.

The titles are written on scientific paper work which also emphasizes the genre and what the movie will include.

The music is quite eere. It is also generally distorted and there are very few sounds. there is also no melody only the sounds of percussion and little scifi sounds, this could show that the film may be quite 'secret' and there wont be many big action moments or there maybe more intense dialogue moments than visual. Generally when the music is loud, punchy and there is a strong beat and there are visuals to match it we know that there will be lots of big action moments like 'The Avengers or Transformers'. Towards the end of the sequence the music builds up in volume, then it sounds like the computer/machine is about to break then it repeats it. Afterwards the music changes to a pitch bent piano showing that something isn't right, or something keeps changing.

However it doesn't give away anything about the characters or settings.

Working on Adobe Premier/Editing Diary 15-03-13

Since the burglary, we have got new iMacs and new software, Adobe premier. Tina and I have been using the software. Generally it is fairly similar to Final cut pro, making it easy to pick up and use, but I prefer the interface of adobe premier.

Here's a picture of what we've edited so far with the new lab footage.

Editing Diary 14-03-13

Today we edited a little bit more of our sequence and I showed Tina what I had done so far, as we looked through the footage we realised that there were a lot of continuity errors and generally most of the actual acting wasn't rehearsed and looked unrealistic. So today Tina and I re shot all of the lab scenes slightly differently but using the same concept. I thought that it was a better idea because we this time we new exactly what we were doing and it looked a lot better than what we previously filmed.

My Reflection 14-03-13

Today our group re shot the lab scenes because the framing wasn't right the first time we shot it. Then Tina and I edited the first minute of our sequence, so far i think that the lab shots that we re-filmed look a lot clearer and they are better quality. Generally I think that the editing is going really well.

Continuity Editing

I have learn the way in which continuity editing works and how to construct a sequence

- Firstly you start with an establish or a master to shot show the audience where they are or who will be in the scene E.g in the spooks scene we are show the outside of the building first

- Then if there is dialogue then it would be better and more interesting to use shot reverse shots and over the shoulder mid shots E.g. when we watched the Oceans 12 clip of the staged dialogue scene at the airport so we made a story board and redid the scene to make it more interesting and so the we could see their facial expressions

-Inter cutting is used to show more than one different story in the sequence e.g. for the spooks sequence. Because we are shown the man in the office then the people in the warehouse and by using inter cutting we are shown that the sequences are linked but not directly as they are in two different locations with different people.

-Match on action creating a continuous sense of the same action E.g. someone walking through a door and we cut to see their hand on the door handle then we cut to see them coming out of the other side without the audience really noticing the cut

-Graphic matches, subtle cutting between two images that graphically match for example in The Mummy we see the universal logo then it cuts to the sun and in Shindlers List at the start the candle cuts to the steam train and to the part where the steam is coming out

-180 degree rule when the characters in the scene stay in the same left to right position, so the cameras stay on the same side of the '180 degree' line. If this rule is broken, it will confuse the audience

Spooks Sequence

A task that we had to do was to put the screen shots in an order that we thought was correct or that worked. From doing this task I have learnt a lot about inter cutting and how it works like how we can cut between two different stories at once like from the man on the computer and the people in the warehouse and how we can show that the two stories are connected.
